Pre Algebra Readiness Profile and Course Expectations
Textbook: Pre Algebra, Prentice Hall
Students in this course are on track for completion of Pre Calculus in 11th grade. This course supports SAT expectations for 11th grade.
Student Background:
Students entering Pre Algebra should already have a strong understanding of the following concepts:
- Whole Number Operations, Fractions, Decimals
- Solve one-step and two-step word problems.
- Fractions & Decimals to simple Percents and vice-versa
- Metric and English system conversions
- Order of Operations
Entering Pre Algebra, students should already have an understanding of and have been introduced to the following concepts:
- Fractions, Decimals, Exponents and Integers
- Basic properties
- Solving one step equations
- Coordinate plane graphing points/coordinates
- Percents, Ratios and Proportions
- Probability
- Area, Perimeter, and Volume of Rectangular Prism
Workload Expectations:
Pre Algebra maintains a pace of approximately 1 section per class and one chapter every 3 weeks. Students will be expected to spend an average of approximately 1/2 hour outside of class on homework for each class hour. Each semester will have approximately 7 tests and 7 quizzes, with a final exam at the end of each semester. The majority of a student's grade will be determined by tests and quizzes.
In Pre Algebra, students will learn concepts such as:
- Solving multi-step equations and inequalities with fractions, decimals and variables on both sides.
- Graphing lines using table of values and understanding slope
- Volume of Prisms, Cylinders, Pyramids, and Cones
- Surface Area of Prisms, Cylinders, and Pyramids
- Simple Interest, Percent of Increase and Decrease, Discount
- trigonometric Ratios and Pythagorean Theorem
- Statistics and Probability involving Combinations, Permutations and Odds
- Number sense/Rational numbers
