Student Background:
Students entering Pre Algebra Honors should already have a strong understanding of the following concepts:
- Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions, decimals, and integers,
- Solving one-step and two-step equations and word problems
- Fractions and Decimals to simple Percents and vice-versa
- Metric and English system conversions
- Order of Operations
- Basic Properties
- Coordinate Plane graphing points/coordinates
- Percents, Ratios, and Proportions
- Area, Perimeter, and Volume of rectangular prisms
- Probability
Workload Expectations:
Pre Algebra Honors is an advanced course that maintains a pace of approximately 1 section per hour of class and one chapter every 2 to 3 weeks. Students are expected to spend approximately 45 minutes outside of class on homework for each class hour. Each semester will have approximately 6 tests and 6 quizzes. The majority of a student's grade will be determined by tests and quizzes.
In Pre Algebra Honors, students will learn concepts such as:
- Solving multi-step equations and inequalities with fractions, decimals and variables on both sides
- An introduction to algebra proofs
- Solving Algebra word problems involving integers, coin, mixture, and age in one variable
- Graphing lines and inequalities using table of values and the slope and y-intercept
- Volume of prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres
- Surface Area of prisms, cylinders, pyramids, and spheres
- Simple interest, compound interest, commission, profit, percent of increase and decrease, and discount
- Trigonometric ratios, Pythagorean Theorem, and Special Right Triangles
- Statistics and Probability involving combinations, permutations, and odds
- Set Theory
- Graphing systems of equations
