Frequently Asked Questions: North Coast High School

  1. What types of students attend North Coast High School? We have all types of students in grades 9-12 attending North Coast. For instance, there are students attending North Coast who:
    • need flexible hours for work/training schedules
    • are credit deficient and need to take more than six classes per semester
    • have family responsibilities that prohibit daily school attendance
    • want to graduate early and need to complete more than six classes per semester to do so
    • prefer self-directed learning

  2. Can I go to college if I graduate from North Coast High School? Yes. The Diploma earned at North Coast is a San Dieguito Union High School diploma which is issued by the SDUHSD .

  3. Is North Coast WASC accredited? Yes.

  4. Will colleges place less value on a North Coast diploma? No, all North Coast graduates have completed the same graduation requirements as graduates of the more traditional schools in the SDUHSD.

  5. Is there a graduation ceremony at North Coast? Yes, complete with caps & gowns.

  6. Are the teachers at North Coast credentialed? Yes, all teachers at North Coast are fully credentialed teachers.

  7. What is the difference between Sunset and North Coast? Sunset is a continuation high school, and students are in attendance 4.25 hours daily. Students may be referred to Sunset for disciplinary reasons or on a voluntary basis. North Coast students are required to attend school a minimum of l hour weekly and complete a minimum of 30 hours of schoolwork weekly (including time spent in class). However, our most successful students attend at least three days weekly for 3-4 hours. North Coast is a totally voluntary school.

  8. What books and materials are used at North Coast? North Coast's curriculum is aligned with all of the SDUHSD high schools. North Coast utilizes the very same textbooks and materials used in the more traditional schools of our district.

  9. Can students attend North Coast during the summer? North Coast operates on a traditional calendar. Students interested in attending summer school may do so at one of our comprehensive school sites.

  10. How does a student enroll at North Coast? A student would first meet with his/her high school counselor, obtain a referral from the counselor, return all school texts and receive a check out slip and transcript from the high school registrar. Then an appointment would need to be made at North Coast by calling 760-753-649l x56l6 or 56l7. Student and parent would need to attend the enrollment meeting which would take approximately one hour.
